The role of an artiste manager includes negotiating contracts and fees; therefore, it is important that everything that the manager does on behalf of an artiste is stated in a management agreement between artiste and manager. In this agreement, it should be established who will be responsible for receiving payments for the artiste.
It’s a matter of transparency and accountability. As long as there is honesty I don’t think it really matters, but I believe the artiste should allow the manager to focus on handling the business side of his/her career; including negotiating contracts and receiving payments.
Maintaining accurate books and records of all transactions concerning artiste is necessary. This will provide both parties with information about payments and receipts and also strengthen loyalty and trust in this relationship.
At the end of the day, it’s about what the artiste and the manager decides…there is no rule in this regard. The artiste has to do what he or she thinks is right and what they will be comfortable with.
