Overcoming imposter syndrome over 50 was never something I planned to write about on this blog, but if my journey can encourage even one person to step out of fear, then every step of this detour has been worth it.

Back in 2017, I officially registered Mystique Professional Services as a business in Jamaica. I had a vision, a registered name, and a clear direction: to offer Entertainment Public Relations and Services. But then, I put it on a shelf.

For years, I left it alone and tried other paths. I poured my energy into custom crochet, handcrafting plant hangers, hats, and custom pieces for people who loved my work. Yet, as much as I adore the craft, I never truly viewed it as my primary business vehicle. I tested the waters in freelance sales, but no matter what project I worked on, Mystique was always waiting quietly in the back of my mind.

So why did I wait so long to activate it?

The honest answer is fear.

I had a classic, bad case of imposter syndrome. Even though I had spent years working in the media industry, I convinced myself I didn’t have the “right” connections because most of my background was in media advertising and sponsorship sales. I looked at the big agencies in Jamaica and asked myself, “How could I possibly compete with the established bigwigs?”

Then 2020 hit. The pandemic dealt a massive blow to the global entertainment industry. It felt like another reason to stay safe, stay hidden, and hold back.

My mind created an entire catalog of excuses. The loudest one recently was: Who would want to hire or work with a woman in her 50s launching something new?

Fear has a sneaky way of stealing our joy. It makes us feel like frauds in fields where we actually hold decades of real-world insight. But out of the blue recently, something shifted inside me. I decided I was done letting fear make my decisions. I am doing everything necessary to build my business, starting right now.

I am starting from scratch, practicing the same patience I practice in my backyard container garden. Just as I watch my herbs slowly push through the soil, I am sipping my daily bush teas, studying, building my systems, and stepping into my groove.
