Gardening Events in Jamaica: My Home, Health and Garden Expo Experience

Gardening events in Jamaica offer opportunities to learn, discover new plants, and connect with others who share an interest in growing. On Sunday, I attended the Home, Health and Garden Expo at the National Arena in Kingston, Jamaica, and came away with new plants for my container garden, useful gardening knowledge, and a renewed appreciation for the possibilities these events offer.

The expo was a two-day event, but Sunday was the day I chose to attend. When I saw the advertisements mentioning a garden workshop, I knew I wanted to be there. As someone who is becoming increasingly interested in growing herbs, exploring herbal wellness, and cultivating food in a small space, the opportunity to learn more about gardening was enough to get me out of the house.

What I experienced was even more enjoyable than I had anticipated.

Learning About Plant Care at the Garden Workshop

One of the main reasons I attended the Home, Health and Garden Expo was the garden workshop conducted by Jamaica’s Forestry Department.

The session covered topics related to planting, nurturing, and maintaining plants, as well as identifying and addressing plant diseases. These are important areas of knowledge for anyone who wants to grow healthy plants, whether in a home garden, on a farm, or in containers.

As a relatively new home gardener, I am learning as I go. There is so much to discover about the plants we grow, the conditions they need to thrive, and the challenges that can arise along the way. Sometimes, a plant may not be doing as well as expected, and understanding what could be affecting it is an important part of the learning process.

I appreciated the opportunity to attend a workshop that focused on practical gardening knowledge. Experiences like these can be valuable for beginners who may not know where to start, as well as for people who have been growing plants for years and want to expand their knowledge.

I do not want to attempt to repeat the workshop’s instructions from memory, so I encourage anyone seeking further information about forestry, trees, plant care, and related resources to visit the Forestry Department of Jamaica.

I hope to attend more workshops and educational events as I continue developing my gardening skills.

A Beautiful Display of Flowers, Herbs and Food Crops

Visiting the Evergrow Garden Center Display Area. I really enjoyed talking with the representatives, learning, and admiring their beautiful setup.

Beyond the workshop, one of the things I enjoyed most was seeing the variety of plants available from the different vendors.

This was my first time attending an event with so many vendors displaying and selling plants in one place. There were orchids, different types of flowers, herbs, and various food crops. Everywhere I looked, there was something interesting to discover.

It was beautiful!

Although my main interest is in herbs and food crops, I also appreciate beautiful things. I love seeing colour among the greenery, which is why I do not mind adding a few flowering and ornamental plants to my garden.

I believe a garden can serve different purposes. It can provide food, offer opportunities to explore traditional herbal uses, and create a more attractive and enjoyable space to spend time in.

Seeing such a wide variety of plants together also reminded me that gardening does not have to look one particular way. Some people may be interested in flowers, others in vegetables, and others in herbs. Some may want to grow a little of everything.

There is room for all these interests, and events like the Home, Health and Garden Expo give people an opportunity to explore them.

New Additions to My Container Garden

Of course, I could not attend a plant expo without bringing home a few additions for my own garden!

Among the plants and planting materials I purchased were Joseph’s coat, a beautiful plant known locally for its green and burgundy colouring; fine-leaf mint; another rosemary plant; sweet pepper; red callaloo; holy basil; and sweet potato slips.

I was especially happy to get the sweet potato slips because I am interested in exploring more ways to grow food in my available space.

My gardening journey is centred on making the most of what I have. I do not have a large backyard or a farm. I grow in containers, and I have to be thoughtful about how I use my limited space.

That is why container gardening interests me so much. It gives people an opportunity to explore growing herbs and food without necessarily needing a large piece of land. With suitable containers, appropriate growing conditions, and a little planning, even a small space can become a place to grow something useful.

I am also interested in exploring vertical gardening and other practical ways to make limited space work.

I still have plenty to learn, and not every plant will thrive. That is part of the experience. I am documenting my journey, learning from what works and what does not, and sharing what I discover along the way.

My intention is not to grow plants for sale. I am growing for myself, exploring the relationship between gardening and wellness, and encouraging others to see what may be possible in their own homes.

If you have been thinking about growing some of your own herbs or food but believe you do not have enough space, I hope my journey will encourage you to start with what you have.

Relaxing at the Hope Garden’s Plant Nursery display area. It was so beautiful, I couldn’t resist.

Why Jamaica Needs More Gardening and Herbal Wellness Events

One of the things I kept thinking about after visiting the expo was how much I would love to see more events of this kind in Jamaica.

I would welcome more gardening events in Jamaica that bring together plant vendors, home gardeners, farmers, horticultural professionals, herbal wellness enthusiasts, and people who simply want to learn.

Imagine having more opportunities to attend workshops on growing herbs and vegetables, caring for plants, managing common gardening challenges, and making the most of small spaces. Imagine events where people could discover new plants, purchase seedlings and planting materials, speak with knowledgeable growers, and learn practical skills they could apply at home.

There could also be opportunities for people who want to turn their interests into businesses. Alongside the gardening demonstrations, events could feature educational sessions on marketing, building a customer base, and promoting gardening or herbal wellness products and services.

These events could serve people at different stages of their journey. Someone who has never planted anything could attend to learn the basics, while an experienced grower could discover new varieties, exchange ideas, or connect with potential customers and business partners.

I also see a connection between gardening, food security, and wellness.

Growing some of our own food can help us become more involved in how we access and produce it. Even when we cannot grow everything we need, cultivating a few herbs or vegetables can be a meaningful starting point. It can also help us develop practical skills and a greater appreciation for the effort involved in producing food.

For me, herbal wellness is another part of this journey. I enjoy learning about herbs and their traditional uses, while recognising the importance of reliable information and appropriate healthcare guidance.

More gardening and herbal wellness events could create spaces where people learn, share experiences, discover resources, and make connections that support these interests.

I would love to see that happen more often in Jamaica.

How Mystique Professional Services Connects to This Vision

My interest in gardening and herbal wellness is personal, but there is also a professional connection I would like to explore.

Through Mystique Professional Services, my business in public relations and sponsorship marketing, I want to help suitable gardening and herbal wellness events connect with potential sponsors.

Organising an expo, workshop, or educational event takes resources. Sponsorship can help event organisers bring their ideas to life, reach more people, and create better opportunities for learning and participation.

For businesses, sponsoring a well-planned event can provide opportunities to connect with audiences relevant to their products, services, and community interests. For event organisers, the right sponsorship partnerships can help support the event’s objectives and strengthen what they can offer attendees.

This is where I see an opportunity for Mystique Professional Services.

I want to use my professional experience to help gardening and herbal wellness event organisers identify potential sponsorship partners and develop opportunities that make sense for both the event and the sponsoring brands.

My interest is not in becoming a commercial grower or selling plants. I am happy to continue learning in my own small garden, documenting my experiences, and sharing them with others.

My professional contribution can be different. I can support the people and organisations creating opportunities for others to learn about gardening, herbal wellness, and food production by helping them pursue suitable sponsorship partnerships.

I believe there is room for more events that combine education, community engagement, business development, and a shared interest in growing.

Looking Forward to More Gardening Experiences

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Home, Health and Garden Expo. I came looking forward to a garden workshop, discovered a beautiful variety of plants, brought home several additions for my garden, and left thinking about the possibilities for similar events in Jamaica.

I look forward to attending more horticultural and gardening events, particularly those that explore herbs, food crops, and practical ways to grow in small spaces. I will always appreciate a few beautiful flowers along the way, too!

As I continue my container gardening and herbal wellness journey, I hope to encourage others to explore what they can grow, learn new skills, and become more confident in caring for their plants.

And beyond my own garden, I hope to see more opportunities for Jamaican gardeners, farmers, herbal wellness businesses, vendors, and event organisers to connect with the people and resources that can help them grow.

Sometimes, attending an event does more than teach us something new. It can also help us recognise an opportunity we had not fully considered before.

This expo did that for me.

Have you attended the Home, Health and Garden Expo, or do you know of other gardening events in Jamaica? I would love to hear about your experience and discover other events where people can learn, connect, and grow.
